We are incredibly saddened to report the loss of an important member of the Star Wars family. Andrew Jack, who worked as a dialect coach on The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and was best known on screen as Caluan Ematt in those films, has passed away at the age of 76 due to complications of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Andrew Jack had a long and storied career as a dialect coach on more than 80 films since the 1980s. Most notably he worked with Robert Downey Jr. on Restoration(1995) and Sherlock Holmes(2009), as well as Pierce Brosnan on a number of James Bond films. He also helped develop the wide range accents heard in The Lord Of The Rings films and worked on a variety of Marvel films including Captain America: The First Avenger, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
His extensive Star Wars work included working with such actors as Daisy Ridley (Rey) and John Boyega (Finn) to help hone their accents in Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. During production of The Force Awakens he was allowed the opportunity to be in front of the camera for a change, portraying Major Caluan Ematt in the D'Qar scenes. He would later reprise the role in The Last Jedi appearing briefly as newly promoted General Ematt on Crait. Later, Andrew Jack would provide his voice to the character Moloch in the opening scenes of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Andrew Jack's wife, Gabrielle Rogers, wrote a message on Twitter honoring her late husband:
We lost a man today. Andrew Jack was diagnosed with Coronavirus 2 days ago. He was in no pain, and he slipped away peacefully knowing that his family were all 'with' him.— Gabrielle Rogers (@GabrielleRoger1) March 31, 2020
Take care out there, lovers x@RealHughJackman @chrishemsworth @RobertDowneyJr pic.twitter.com/fm5LevA8n2
Our hearts go out to Andrew Jack's wife, family and friends during the incredibly difficult time. Mr. Jack will be sorely missed by Star Wars and film fans everywhere.
And please, let this be a reminder about how serious a threat the COVID-19 virus is. Stay home, practice social distancing, and let's do our best to prevent more tragic losses of life during this crisis.
