The time has come! Just under one month into its theatrical run, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker has officially crossed the billion dollar mark! Walt Disney Studios, the parent company of Lucasfilm, has announced that as of Tuesday the closing chapter of the Skywalker saga had earned $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This comes after the film garnered a $177 million domestic opening, the third highest of 2019.
While one billion is a massive milestone, The Rise Of Skywalker still has a ways to go before it can catch up to its predecessors. 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens ended its theatrical run with a total of $2.068 billion in ticket sales. Furthermore, 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi took in $1.33 billion during its time in theaters. How Episode IX ultimately stacks up against Episodes VII and VIII box office wise will be fascinating to see.
While the success of a Star Wars film might seem inevitable, 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story proved that even a Galaxy far, far away isn't impervious to box office disappointments. It's great to see Episode IX rise(pun intended) above that. And regardless of how you might feel about the film(and it seems everyone has a "hot take" about it these days), there's no denying the finical success of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker!
