Report: Taika Waititi Is In Talks To Develop A New Star Wars Film

By: Benjamin Hart

Is there anyone who doesn't love Taika Waititi? I doubt it. As a writer, director and actor, Waititi previously made a name for himself through such films as What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt For The Wilderpeople, and Thor: Ragnarok. More recently he wrote and directed Jojo Rabbit, for which he recently earned six Oscar nominations. And perhaps his most exciting new project(at least to us Star Wars fans) is his starring role in The Mandalorian as IG-11, as well as directing the finale episode of the Disney+ series.

But it appears Taika Waititi may be far from done with Star Wars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and their sources, Waititi is currently being courted to develop a new Star Wars film. Various details, such as how this film might relate to previously announced Star Wars projects, such as the film being developed by Marvel's Kevin Feige, are not yet clear. THR also speculates that The Mandalorian itself could be used as an incubator for future Star Wars directors, citing the fact that Deborah Chow, who directed Chapters 3 & 7 of that series, has been selected to helm the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

While all we know currently is that Taika Waititi has been approached about a Star Wars film, we don't know if he will accept the job. However, we can make some reasonable speculation based on recent comments Waititi made to Variety when asked if he would do so:

Variety: "Now that you directed an episode of “The Mandalorian” and played IG-11 in the Disney Plus series, does that mean you’ll be directing a “Star Wars” movie one day?"

Waititi: "Oh, I don’t know anything about that, but ‘Mandalorian’ was my chance to work with some stormtroopers."

Variety: "But would you want to direct a “Star Wars” movie?"

Waititi: "Yes. Obviously I would, but I’m going to just settle for IG-11 being the hero of the entire season."

Taika Waititi's next project will be Thor: Love And Thunder, which is slated to begin production later this year. If Waititi does take on a Star Wars film, it likely won't begin development until after the fourth Thor film's release on November 5th, 2021.

The new Star Wars film after Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is expected to hit theaters on December 16th, 2022. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has already chosen a director for that film, and will announce it sometime this month. So, in other words, we should be bracing for some big announcements about the future of Star Wars saga to be dropping literally any day now.

UPDATE: Taika Waititi himself has seemingly responded to this breaking news in a way only Taika would. Take this as you will:
