This story contain SPOILERS from season one of The Mandalorian, including the finale ("Chapter Eight: Redemption).
It's been a wild couple of weeks for Star Wars. Not only did we see the end (for now) of the Skywalker Saga with the release of The Rise of Skywalker in theaters, but also the finale of season one of The Mandalorian on Disney+. The finale had many reveals in store for fans, while also setting up what will surely be the driving force behind the second season. But when can we expect to see season two, and what secrets are does it have in store? While we don't have full answers for those questions just yet, both the production team and Hollywood insiders have some clues for us.
Production on season two began before season one had even started being released, so we always knew we wouldn't have to wait too long before seeing more episodes. The window for the follow-up season's release was made even clearer after the finale was released when executive producer Jon Favreau took to his social media and announced, "Season 2 of #TheMandalorian coming Fall 2020".
Favreau's post also came with the first official tease for the second season, a sculpture of a scantily clad Gamorrean Guard (whose species we first saw in Return of the Jedi, guarding Jabba the Hutt's palace). You can see Favreau's post below,
But surely season two will involve more than just The Mandalorian, or Din Djarin as we learned his real name is, and Baby Yoda fighting (or teaming up with) nearly naked Gamorreans, right? While the production team remains tight lipped about what's to come, Deadline has some more details for fans [POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!]
In their story about Favreau's season two announcement, Deadline dropped this tidbit of information about season two,
"Insiders have hinted that several established characters from the Skywalker saga’s feature films mythology will make appearances during the show’s sophomore season."
Who those Skywalker saga characters are is unknown at this moment, but there has already been some speculation that the series is building up to an appearance from Boba Fett. In the final moments of the first season fifth episode, an shadowy character is seen approaching the corpse of Fennec Shan (Ming-Na Wen). While we never saw their face (or even their upper body), fans have pointed out that the spurs sound effect heard when they walked was the same heard when Boba walked. Could we be headed towards a showdown between Din and Boba? It certainly seems like a possibility.
It would also be exciting to see characters like Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia show up. The new republic was featured briefly in the first season, so it would make sense for the former rebellion to have more a presence in the future. Plus, "The Armorer" mentioned the Jedi in the finale, so if Din is looking to return Baby Yoda to "his people", the only Jedi masters around might be the place to start.
Another possibility would be to bring in Han Solo, and give Alden Ehrenreich another shot at the role he embodied in Solo: A Star Wars Story. If the New Republic is looking for someone who understands the underworld to do a reconnaissance mission, wouldn't Han be the perfect choice. All this is speculation, of course.
In addition to character's from the Skywalker saga, many fans are also hoping to see characters from the animated series' Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars show up. After all, the final scene was Moff Gideon wielding the Dark Saber, a weapon introduced in The Clone Wars and last seen in Rebels. The most obvious choice is Bo-Katan, who was the last person we saw with the Dark Saber before Gideon. And her voice actor, Katee Sackhoff, has made a few references on Twitter that have some fans thinking she may have already shot some material for the series, including one tweet where she described a "career highlight" that she couldn't talk about.
Gotta say today was pretty much a career high for me. One day soon you’ll understand what I mean but for right now, just know that it’s the coolest thing ever!!!— Katee Sackhoff (@kateesackhoff) November 16, 2019
More recently she also had this Twitter exchange, following the season one finale of The Mandalorian, with Darth Maul voice actor Sam Witwer about who is the true owner the Dark Saber,
Hmmmm....I beg to differ 😉— Katee Sackhoff (@kateesackhoff) December 29, 2019
This may be reaching, but it does seem like she's hinting at something and it would be awesome to her portray the character in live action after she voiced her on both animated series.
Other contenders for animated characters who could make the jump to live action in season two include Sabine Wren from Rebels, another Mandalorian whose post-Return of the Jedi fate is unknown, and Ahsoka Tano, who is unarguably the most popular character from Star Wars animation. And her creator Dave Filoni just so happens to be executive producer on The Mandalorian, and got very cage-y when asked if we would ever see her in live action last summer.
Of course, the epilogue of Rebels did tease another mission for both of those characters that would likely have to be completed in-universe first, but then Star Wars has never been restricted by doing things in chronological order.
Regardless of whether anything that's speculated above comes to pass or not, the first season of The Mandalorian was a joy to watch and we are surely in for another thrilling adventure when season two hits Disney+ in Fall 2020.
