Werner Herzog And Carl Weathers Talk About Seeing [SPOILER] On The Set Of 'The Mandalorian'

By: Dominic Jones

This article contains SPOILERS for Episodes 1 & 2 of The Mandalorian.  If you haven't seen the show and don't want to be spoiled stop reading now!

The first episode of The Mandalorian, the first episode of the new live action Disney+ series, ended with the big reveal that the bounty the titular Mandalorian has been chasing all episode is not a fifty year old adult, but actually a baby that is the same species as the Jedi master Yoda.

Much like Yoda in the original trilogy (and The Last Jedi), it turns out the creature was created, not through CGI but, as a practical effect on the set of the TV show.  Two of the series' stars, Carl Weathers (Greef Carga) and Werner Herzog ("The Client") spoke about what it was like to see the character on set during interviews conducted at the series' premiere screening and cast Q&A last week.

Herzog spoke with Variety about seeing the character on set, and had high praise for the techniques that were used to create the effect.  He said that seeing the character was "heartbreaking" and that "On the set, it looked absolutely convincing. It made you cry when you saw it."

You can see Herzog talk about the character in the video below,
Meanwhile, Weathers spoke about the character with Reuters, saying,

"You have to see the shows to figure out who this baby Yoda really is, and what he is all about, or even if he is really a baby Yoda. He has his own name, and he is very interesting and very knowledgeable and very cute. I never use that word, but he is a cute little guy."

In the second episode of The Mandalorian we see that the character already has a deep connection with the Force and is able to use the Force to lift objects that are far larger than them.  So it will be very interesting to see what else the character knows and can do as the series continues.  The third episode of the series will be released on November 22nd.

The Mandalorian is set following the events of Return of the Jedi and follows the adventures of a "lone gunfighter", as he navigates the galaxy in the post-Empire/early days of the New Republic.  The first two episodes of the series is available now on Disney+, with episode three being released on Friday. You can check out the trailer for the series below,

The series is available now on Disney+, and stars Pedro Pascal as The Mandalorian, Gina Carrano as Cara Dune, Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, as well as Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Emily Swallow, and Omid Abtahi in unknown roles.  The Mandalorian is executive produced by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, with episodes directed by Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, and Rick Famuyiwa, and Taika Waititi.
