Report: Colin Trevorrow And Derek Connolly To Receive "Story By" Credits On 'The Rise of Skywalker'

Trevorrow & Connolly on the set of Safety Not Guaranteed in 2012
By: Dominic Jones

Like many recent Star Wars productions, the final film in the sequel trilogy had some difficulties that resulted in a change in the creative team.  Episode IX was originally supposed to be directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurrasic World), with a script written by Trevorrow and his frequent collaborator Derek Connolly.  The duo were eventually removed from the film, and replaced by JJ Abrams (The Force Awakens) and Chris Terrio (Argo) as writers and Abrams as director.

And while Abrams and Terrio likely rewrote most of the script, Writers Guild rules dictate that whoever was the first writer hired on a film film receive some credit for the screenplay.  As a result, when the credits role on The Rise of Skywalker this December, Collider is reporting that Abrams and Terrio will receive a "Written By" credit, and there will be a "Story By" credit that goes to Abrams & Terrio and Trevorrow & Connolly.  There will also be a Based on Characters Created by "George Lucas" credit.

We'll likely never know for sure how similar or different the Abrams/Terio film is to the version Trevorrow and Connolly were working on.  But clearly, Trevorrow and Connolly's contributions were significant enough that the WGA felt they deserved some acknowledgement in the films credits for their work.
