New 'The Mandalorian' Teaser Introduces Ming-Na Wen's Character, Fennec Shand

By: Dominic Jones

With the premiere of The Mandalorian now less than two weeks away, the promotional machine for the series is in full swing.  Today, Vanity Fair revealed a new teaser trailer for the series, which features the first time we hear from two characters.  One being the ugnaught Kuiil (voiced by Nick Nolte), and the other being Fennec Shand (played by Ming-Na Wen).  Wen also sat down with Vanity Fair writer Anthony Breznican to talk about her character and the series.

First, check out the new teaser below,

The character is described in Vanity Fair as "an assassin", who Wen says is, "loyal to herself."  But the character also, according to the actress, "has a good sense of humor about it all as well, which is also fun. You can’t really pinpoint which direction she’s going to go."

Wen also spoke about how the name Fennec Shand relates to the character, telling Vanity Fair,

"We got our inspiration really from the name. The idea of a fennec fox came to mind. She’s tricky, and yet she’s able to maneuver and survive, and be stealthy—so very graceful and agile. I just love that whole image with the name."

The fennec fox also helped inspired Shand's look, Wen explained,

"At first, the idea was maybe just have her hair be loose, unkempt kind of thing. And I thought, Well, she’s going to be wearing a helmet and she’s this stealth assassin. How great would it be if her hair has a bit of the fennec fox architecture to it? So the hairstylist came up with this great braiding system, that just gives an idea of these triangular points. Like her ears."

The Mandalorian is set following the events of Return of the Jedi and follows the adventures of a "lone gunfighter", as he navigates the galaxy in the post-Empire/early days of the New Republic.  The series debuts on Disney+ on November 12th.  If you haven't seen the old trailer, you can check it out below,

The series debuts on November 12th on Disney+, and stars Pedro Pascal as The Mandalorian, Gina Carrano as Cara Dune, Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, as well as Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Emily Swallow, and Omid Abtahi in unknown roles.  The Mandalorian is executive produced by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, with episodes directed by Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, and Rick Famuyiwa, and Taika Waititi.
