Ewan McGregor Talks About The Obi-Wan Disney+ Series

By: Dominic Jones

The weekend of D23 Expo back in August was huge for Star Wars fans.  We got our first official trailer for The Mandalorian, and a shocking new preview for The Rise Of Skywalker.  But perhaps the biggest announcement of was that, after years of rumors and speculation, Ewan McGregor would be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a new live action series on Disney+.  The announcement was made by Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, who brought McGregor out on stage for the reveal, to the delight of the thousands of fans present and millions more following along online.

Just before going out on stage, McGregor was being interviewed by Men's Journal about his career, and his return to the galaxy far, far away.

When asked about what he was looking forward to about returning to Star Wars, the actor replied,

"It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him—Well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with that the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over. (...) I want to get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him. I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that."

McGregor also revealed that the series will be six episodes long (written by Hossein Amini and directed by Deborah Chow, we've subsequently learned), each an hour long.  Filming is currently slated to take place in Summer 2020.  No release date or other cast members have been announced (though Joel Edgerton, who played Owen Lars in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, did say in a recent interview that, "there is a very real possibility" that we would be in the series).

As for the experience of being brought out on stage in front of thousands of cheering fans to announce the series, McGregor told Men's Journal, "I spent most of the ’90s wishing I’d been a rock star. I always felt it would be nice to know what that scream felt like. This is my version of that"
