Daisy Ridley Talks Rey and Kylo in 'The Rise of Skywalker'

By: Dominic Jones

Perhaps the defining relationship of the sequel trilogy is that between our new hero, Rey, and our new villain, Kylo Ren.  Their interactions in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have been, at times, adversarial and, at other times, compassionate, and have set the stage for an incredible finale in The Rise of Skywalker.  Looking ahead to the final film in the sequel trilogy, hitting theaters this December, Daisy Ridley spoke about the two characters and their connection in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Ridley said, "It’s a very complex issue. People talk about toxic relationships and whatever it is. It’s no joke and I think it’s dealt with really well because it’s not skimmed over."

She also said she enjoys hearing fan theories about the Rey/Kylo dynamic (or "Reylo" in fan parlance), also saying, "Obviously, there’s this whole Reylo thing and some people are very passionate about it, some aren’t."

In The Force Awakens, Rey and Kylo start off as enemies with the film culminating in a lightsaber duel between the two of them.  Then their relationship is taken in new directions, however, in The Last Jedi, where they were drawn together through a bond in the Force.  They even teamed up, albeit briefly, in the incredible throne room battle versus Snoke's praetorian guards.  But it didn't last with the duo retreating to their old sides at the end of the film.

Where that leaves things for the opening of The Rise of Skywalker has been the subject of intense speculation.  Some believe they have reverted to being enemies after realizing in the prior film that they could not draw the other to their side.  Others hope that what was established in The Last Jedi will lead to a new dynamic between the two by the end of the film, be it romantic or something else.

As for when we might get our next tease as to what the future of their relationship will hold, the rumor circulating currently is that we'll be seeing the new trailer for The Rise Of Skywalker on October 21st during Monday Night Football on ESPN.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.  The film is directed by JJ Abrams, with a script by Abrams and Chris Terio, and stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie Fisher.
