Rian Johnson Gives A Brief Update On His Upcoming 'Star Wars' Trilogy

By: Dominic Jones

With his new film Knives Out hitting theaters later this year, The Last Jedi writer and director and Rian Johnson is getting ready to head back to the galaxy far, far away.  Johnson's next project is a trilogy of films in the Star Wars galaxy that he will be overseeing, directing and writing at least the first one, and will be set outside the events of the Skywalker saga.  The director gave a brief update on the trilogy while promoting Knives Out in a new interview with Observer.

Johnson said,

"We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’ films is figuring out, ‘what’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward."

The new trilogy was first announced back in November 2017, prior to the release of The Last Jedi.  Since then not much has been heard about the trilogy, due in large part to Johnson's commitments to writing and directing Knives Out.  When the release schedule for upcoming Star Wars movies was released, and only three films were expected from 2022 to 2026, some speculated that Johnson's trilogy had been cancelled in favour of the trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.  These latest comments from Johnson seem to put that theory to bed (though it's still not clear how all these films will fit into the release schedule).

As we await the first film in Johnson's new trilogy, at we'll have The Rise Of Skywalker and Knives Out to look forward to.  Check out the trailer for Knives Out below,
