John Williams Says He's Written 25 Minutes Of The Score For 'The Rise Of Skywalker'

By: Dominic Jones

John Williams, one of the only people to work on all nine movies in the Skywalker saga, is hard at work on its conclusion.  Williams spoke with The Times' Ben Hoyle this week where he revealed that he had written about twenty five minutes of music for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the JJ Abrams directed conclusion to the sequel trilogy which hits theaters this December.  Williams didn't say much about the film, but he did share that he liked what he'd seen so far.

"Williams beams when he talks about watching an early cut of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which will bring the nine-film space saga to an end this Christmas. He likes what he has seen “very much” and has so far written about 25 minutes of score in about a month."

Williams has said that The Rise Of Skywalker will be his last Star Wars movie.  He had previously written the score for all eight installments in the original, prequel, and sequel trilogies, as well as contributing a theme to last year's Solo: A Star Wars Story.  His work on the Star Wars films have brought him five Academy Award nominations, and one win (for the original Star Wars in 1977).

In addition, Williams also recently contributed to the soundtrack of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the upcoming theme park expansion opening at Disneyland in California later this month (and at Disney World in Florida in August).  You can listen to his Galaxy's Edge suite here.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.  The film is directed by JJ Abrams, with a script by Abrams and Chris Terio, and stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie Fisher.
