Rumor: Dave Filoni to Direct Episodes of Jon Favreau's Live Action Series, and Other Production Details

By: Dominic Jones
Production on the upcoming live action Star Wars series from writer and executive producer Jon Favreau is really starting to shape up.  Earlier this week, we got our first look at one of the sets where action for the series, which will debut on the upcoming Disney direct to consumer streaming service, will be shot.  Now MakingStarWars.net's Jason Ward has some more details about the series' production and what's going on on set these days as production gets underway this week.

  • Dave Filoni (creator of Star Wars Resistance, executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, and supervising director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars) will reportedly direct two episodes of the first season.
  • Rogue One director of photography Greig Fraser is involved in some capacity.
  • The show is operating under the codename "Project Huckleberry".
  • Werner Herzog said last month he was working on "a big franchise film, about which I’m not supposed to say anything", which has the codename "Huckleberry".  Read into that what you will.
  • The first season will be eight episodes, not ten as initially reported.  This is because, according to Ward, "as the rumor goes, the story only needed eight episodes and that’s why the number came out to eight episodes. All killer, no filler."
They also reported that some filming did take place yesterday, with a pair of actors standing on the roof of a building.  There isn't much detail about what was going on or who the characters are, but you can read all about it and see more pictures of the set here.

Perhaps the most exciting tidbit dropped today, especially for long time fans of Star Wars animation, is that Dave Filoni will reportedly be directing two episodes of this new series.  Filoni worked very closely with Star Wars creator George Lucas for eight years on The Clone Wars, and has since become the go-to guy for Star Wars animation at Lucasfilm.  To see him get the chance to move to the live action realm of Star Wars is very exciting for those of us who have followed his previous work.  Not to mention the fact that Filoni has a unique familiarity with the backstory to what the series will reportedly focus on.

With filming seemingly now underway, it's only a matter of time before we see an official announcement on StarWars.com about the cast, as well as writers and directors, and perhaps even a series title.
