John Williams Cancels Concert Appearance Due To Illness

By: Benjamin Hart

If you're a Star Wars music fan, or just a aficionado of film scores in general, there is one name that comes to mind before any other: John Williams. The 86 year old composer has scored all eight episodic Star Wars films, and is expected to begin working on the ninth(and final) Star Wars episode very soon. But unfortunately it seems Mr. Williams might need our well wishes right now as new reports have stated that the living legend has fallen ill.

The news came via a press release from The Royal Albert Hall in London where Williams was slated to conduct an orchestra at a concert this Friday. The statement announced that, while the show would proceed as planned, Williams would be unable to attend due to an illness. An an earlier version of the press release even made mention of the composer being hospitalized, but that detail has since been removed, perhaps due to it being inaccurate. You can read Royal Albert Hall full statement on John Williams below:

Unfortunately, owing to a last-minute illness, John Williams greatly regrets that he is no longer able to conduct this concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.
John travelled to London but was taken ill and is unable to conduct this Friday’s concert. It is his wish that the performance should go ahead, and his colleague and dear friend Maestro Dirk Brossé has kindly agreed to conduct the LSO for this very special event.
Mr. Williams’ management said: “John is so sorry that an illness prevents him from conducting Friday’s concert, and he’s grateful to his friend Maestro Dirk Brossé for taking the podium in his place. He so wishes he could be with everyone, and the knowledge that 5,000 of his friends will be joining together to celebrate his music is a great comfort to him as he recovers. He wishes everyone a very joyous evening of music.”

As noted, Dirk Brossé, who was handpicked by Williams himself, will be conducting the full concert which is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm this Friday, October 26th, at The Royal Albert Hall in London. Despite the absence of John Williams, it is sure to be an incredible experience.

And if all of you could take a moment to send your thoughts, prayers, well wishes, and good vibes through the Force to John Williams, I think it just might help the maestro get back on his feet sooner rather than later. All of us at the SWU certainly wish him a speedy recovery, and we can't wait to hear his score for Star Wars: Episode IX!
