Oscar Isaac Talks About the Experience of Making 'Episode IX'

By: Benjamin Hart

It's hard to believe we're still more than a year away from the release of Star Wars: Episode IX. Despite that, the hype has continued to build around the film that's been touted as the "final chapter" of the Skywalker saga. Oscar Isaac, who portrayed Poe Dameron previously in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, will be back as the hotshot pilot and Rebel leader in Episode IX. Just recently, Isaac sat down with IndieWire to discuss his career and life so far, dealing with fan expectations and opinions, and, of course, Star Wars.

First off, Oscar revealed that once he's done with his Star Wars work he'll be taking a year off for some much needed rest. And speaking on Episode IX specifically, he shared that director and co-writer J.J. Abrams has been allowing Isaac and his cast mates to do more improvisation on set:

“The way they’ve been shooting it right now is looser than it’s been for the last two times... It does feel like a relief to get on set and feel like, ‘Oh, we can try things.’ It’s a testament to J.J. coming back and feeling confident. There’s less pressure for it to be right. We just want to make a good movie and have a really good time while doing it.”

And in the wake of the somewhat mixed reaction to The Last Jedi, Oscar seems aware but unfazed by the expectations and opinions of fans:

“Luckily, since I’m not directing it, producing it, or distributing it, I don’t have to worry so much about fan expectations. Also, not all fans have the same expectations...You make a movie and people are supposed to like, or not like it, or not care about it. Those are the only three options. So it’s not shocking that one of those things happened.”

Isaac also drew comparisons between the reaction to the Sequels and the backlash the Prequel Trilogy received more than a decade prior:

“People had very strong feelings, but there wasn’t as much of an organized way to speak out about it... People that run blogs and websites need content. So it’s like, ‘There’s some content!’ Five people on Twitter. Hundreds. Whatever it is. Then you make it into a story.”
