Sam Witwer Discusses The Return of Darth Maul in 'Solo'

By: Dominic Jones

Back in May, fans everywhere had to pick their jaws up off the ground when Darth Maul made a surprise return to the silver screen in Solo: A Star Wars Story.  At the end of the film, it was revealed that the real leader behind the mysterious criminal organization Crimson Dawn was the former Sith Lord who was once thought to be dead.  The scene also saw the return of Ray Park as the physical presence of Maul, and Sam Witwer (who played the character in several animated projects) as his voice.

Witwer has been mostly silent about his surprise return, but he finally spoke about the return during an appearance on The Star Wars Show, Lucasfilm's official YouTube variety show.  The actor revealed to host Anthony Carboni, what it was like working with Park and how his insight on the character informed some of the decisions in the film.  Check it out below,

Maul seemingly died at the end of The Phantom Menace, however the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars revealed that he survived and sought to establish himself in the galaxy once more by amassing power in the criminal underworld.  Maul would also later appear in the subsequent animated series Star Wars Rebels, which takes place chronologically after the events of Solo

Maul's return dominated the discussion following the release of the film.  Solo co-screenwriter Jon Kasdan said at the time about why he pushed for Maul to return,

"The thing about Maul is that he is a character freighted with baggage. From losing his mentor, from his defeat [at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi], from his long journey post that defeat, the Clone Wars, the Shadow Collective, we thought this is a character who comes with so much narrative richness that to glimpse him has power and the promise of stories to come."

Hopefully we get to see some of those stories still to come.
