Report: Matt Smith Cast In 'Star Wars Episode IX'

By: Dominic Jones

Geronimo!  Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has joined the cast of the upcoming film Star Wars Episode IX, according to a new report from Variety.  Everything about Smith's role, as it is with just about everything about the JJ Abrams directed film, is under wraps--although Variety does describe the role as "key."  The film is currently being shot in England, and is slated to come out in December 2019.

In addition to playing the eleventh doctor, Smith's previous roles include Prince Philip on the Netflix series The Crown, as well as parts in Terminator Genisys, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.  He is also the third Doctor to appear in Star Wars.  The fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, and the tenth Doctor, David Tennant, both lent their voices to animated Star Wars projects (Baker as Bendu on Star Wars Rebels and Tennant as Huyang on The Clone Wars).

Back in 2013, during the casting process for The Force Awakens, Smith was rumored to be among the actors who auditioned for director JJ Abrams.  He also expressed an interest in appearing in the franchise in an interview earlier that year.  Now, it appears that he got his wish.

Smith is the second actor who had previously lobbied for a role in Star Wars to be reported to joining the film in the past seven days.  Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan revealed that he has a role in the film.

Star Wars Episode IX hit theaters on December 20th, 2019.  The film is directed by JJ Abrams, with a script by Abrams and Chris Terio.  The film stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, Anthony Daniels, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, and Carrie Fisher.
