Dave Filoni Says He's Not Involved "Day-To-Day" With 'Star Wars Resistance'

By: Dominic Jones

Lucasfilm animation veteran Dave Filoni has revealed that he has a different role on the next animated series, Star Wars Resistance (debuting this fall on Disney XD), than he has on previous Star Wars series' he's worked on.  Filoni, who supervising director on both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, revealed in a new interview with IGN that he is not involved in the "day-to-day" work of the series due to his other responsibilities at Lucasfilm.

Filoni explained,

"Resistance is a bit different, in that I'm not on that day-to-day. I created and set it in motion, but I've given that to other people to raise up, people that I've worked with a long time, who I think deserve the opportunity to tell stories and I think it's exciting, and I give them my thoughts and notes – I was just doing that this morning, like George would give me. So that's fun."

So why isn't Filoni involved in Resistance the same way he was on Rebels and The Clone Wars?  At least part of the reason is the highly anticipated return of The Clone Wars, which was announced at San Diego Comic Con last month.  Filoni told IGN,

"And then obviously with Clone Wars I'm very in the weeds on that and will have to be, because I myself have had to go back and watch a whole bunch of stuff that I had done, and I went back and watched Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones in depth again. I'm like, "I have to upload this whole timeline." Just the intricacy of how the clones got made and where Dooku was and all of those things were stuff that I was just doing from memory at the time, because I was in it. Then I switched time periods and went on and did Star Wars Rebels, so to go back into Clone Wars, I have to remember, “Wait – where was everybody? How did that work?" And I had charts and figured all this stuff out, but I've uploaded the chip now, so I'm good."

Lately, fans have questioned why we've seen more from the return of The Clone Wars than we have from Resistance, given that Clone Wars isn't expected to debut (again) until next year while Resistance is set to premiere in the Fall.  Some have speculated that Resistance will be targeted at a younger demographic and that its marketing strategy will be similar to that of Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures.  Trailers and other promotion for new seasons of The Freemaker Adventures would typically debut much closer to the season premiere than we would see for Star Wars Rebels.  However, given the failure of the Solo marketing campaign, which was significantly condensed compared to other films, it is understandable to be concerned about the lack of information about new project as we get closer and closer to its release.
