Rumor: Keri Russell In Talks To Appear in 'Star Wars Episode IX'

By: Dominic Jones

With production about the begin on Star Wars Episode IX, the final installment in the sequel trilogy, the film is looking to add a new major character to its cast.  Variety is reporting that Keri Russell (Felicity, The Americans) is in talks to appear in a "action-heavy" role in the JJ Abrams directed film.  Russell and Abrams previously worked together on the series Felicity, which was created by Abrams and starred Russell in the titular role, and the 2006 film Mission Impossible III.  Details about her role in Episode IX remain shrouded in secrecy.

"Abrams and Lucasfilm execs met with several actresses for the role in the past two months and settled on Russell right before the Fourth of July holiday. Abrams will likely cast two more actors by the time the film begins production at the end of the month."

Russell has received great acclaim for her latest role, undercover KGB agent Elizabeth Jennings on the FX series The Americans.  Russell was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2016 and 2017 for the Primetime Emmy for her work on The Americans.  She also won a Golden Globe in 1999 for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama for her role on Felicity.

With filming slated to begin on Episode IX at the end of the month, hopefully we'll hear official confirmation of Russell's role, as well as what other new cast members might be joining the film, sooner rather than later.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019 and is directed by JJ Abrams with a script by Abrams and Chris Terrio.  Cast members who are expected to return included Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, Oscar Isaac, and Domhnall Gleeson.
