'Solo' Projected To Open With A $160-170 Million Memorial Day Weekend

By: Dominic Jones

With Solo: A Star Wars Story being released in theaters this month, the first projections for how well the film will do at the box office are starting to hit.  The most optimistic of these, coming from Deadline, is that the film will make over $170 million plus during its first weekend.  The Hollywood Reporter was slightly more conservative in their estimate, projecting the film would open to a $160 million plus weekend.

Obviously, the film is not expected to hit the heights of The Force Awakens or Avengers: Infinity War. A more accurate comparison would be the first Star Wars Story film, Rogue One, which opened to $155.5 million over it's first weekend.  It's not a perfect comparison, however, as Rogue One's opening weekend was only comprised of three days (Friday-Sunday), while Solo's will be four (Friday-Monday) as a result of it opening on Memorial Day weekend.  Still it does suggest that Solo is more-or-less on pace for what's expected from the Star Wars stand alone films.

Not to mention that at $160 million Memorial Day weekend would also set a new box office record, passing Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End which currently holds the box office record for highest Memorial Day weekend with $153 million.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Tobias Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, and Paul Bettany (The Avengers) as Dryden Vos.  The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
