Video: ‘George Lucas on Star Wars Being Anti-Authoritarian'

By: Dominic Jones

When Avatar and Titanic director James Cameron isn't hoping for Marvel movies to fail so that people will be more interested in his five Avatar sequels, he's hosting a new show on AMC called James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction.  On the series, Cameron interviews science fiction storytellers about the genre and its potential.  Among those who will be interviewed for the series is Star Wars creator George Lucas.  A preview clip for the series was released on the AMC YouTube channel which features Cameron and Lucas discussing how Star Wars has always been influenced by the politics of the day, such as the ways the Vietnam War was an influence on Lucas as he was crafting the Original trilogy.  You can check out the video below,

Lucas has never been shy about his political opinions or their influence on the Star Wars saga.  For instance, he explained to Lawrence Kasdan during the writing of Return of the Jedi that Richard Nixon was the basis for the Emperor's backstory.  Lucas explained in 1981, "He was a politician. Richard M. Nixon was his name. He subverted the senate and finally took over and became an imperial guy and he was really evil. But he pretended to be a really nice guy."

Just another reminder that Star Wars is, and always has been, political.  It didn't change with The Last Jedi or Rogue One, those movies are just continuing with what the series has always done.
