Sunday was a big day for Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the film took home a total of five awards from the Rakuten TV Empire Awards, which is hosted annually by Empire Magazine. The ceremony was held in London's Roundhouse theater and key members of The Last Jedi cast & crew were on hand to accept the awards.
While initially receiving nominations in nine categories, The Last Jedi was awarded accolades for Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design, along with the top honor of Best Film. Furthermore, Rian Johnson received the award for Best Director, and Daisy Ridley won Best Actress for her portrayal of Rey. In addition, Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill was honored with Empire Icon Award.
Upon taking the stage, Hamill graciously accepted the award stating:
“Empire I think of as a magazine written by fans, for fans. First and foremost, that describes me, and I think the fans realise that — I’m one of them. I share this with all of you, and with the fans. Without them, I certainly wouldn’t be standing here.”
Rian Johnson took to Twitter to also share his gratitude:
There is no other word for this: I am CHUFFED. Thank you Empire readers!! https://t.co/867iqm4sEW— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) March 19, 2018
