Filming For 'Star Wars: Episode IX' To Begin This Summer

By: Benjamin Hart

D23 Expo, Disney's biannual convention, took place at the Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan over the weekend, and much was revealed about the company's plans for its various assets. Star Wars was well represented during the event, and we were treated to some new details on Galaxy's Edge, as well as an update on some upcoming films.

According to the official D23 site, during a special Marvel/Star Wars panel, a video message from J.J. Abrams was shown there, in which Abrams confirmed that Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming this Summer. In addition, some behind the scenes footage from Solo: A Star Wars Story was also reportedly shown to the audience:

"...The Walt Disney Studios presented a special panel dedicated to Marvel and Star Wars. Marketing President Ricky Strauss was brought to the stage by none other than R2-D2 and C-3PO to talk about the massive success of the Star Wars saga… and give a peek at what’s to come. J.J. Abrams, hard at work co-writing Episode IX before directing it this summer, filmed a special greeting for the audience. And then Ricky unveiled never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes footage from the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story."

Of course, Abrams has been working on the script for Episode IX alongside co-writer Chris Terrio since the duo signed on to the project last October(after former writer/director Colin Trevorrow left the project), with Abrams also returning to direct the film. We'll definitely have to look out for some updates regarding the beginning of principal photography sometime after Solo is released in theaters, which will be exciting.

Speaking of which, I do hope that behind the scenes reel for Solo is released to the public sooner rather than later. With as troubled a production as this film has had, it will be nice to see a more positive look behind the curtain of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Star Wars: Episode IX is slated for release on December 20th, 2019, while Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, which is only 100 days away!
