The condensed marketing period for Solo: A Star Wars Story is in full swing now. After a teaser during the Super Bowl, a full teaser trailer and character posters on Monday, we now have the first gallery of images from the film, thanks to Entertainment Weekly. Solo is the cover story for this week's issue of EW and, as usual, there will be several online stories about the film by reporter Anthony Breznican. The gallery went up this morning, and we've highlighted some of the images below,
About the character relationships in the film, Breznican writes that,
"Along the way (Han) will befriend “walking carpet” Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), fall head over heels for shadowy Qui’ra (Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke), and cross paths with Lando Calrissian (Atlanta’s Donald Glover stepping into the cape of Billy Dee Williams) and his droid sidekick L3-37 (played via motion capture by Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.)
The wannabe smuggler will also face career crooks
Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), blaster-toting Val (Thandie Newton),
and crime boss Dryden Vos (played by Paul Bettany)."
This first image features Alden Ehrenreich as Han, alongside Chewbacca, meeting with Woody Harrelson's Tobias Beckett aboard a, much cleaner, Millennium Falcon. Director Ron Howard described Beckett to EW, saying, "He’s a powerful criminal, but a free agent. Tobias Beckett really shapes Han more than anybody, as Han comes to
believe that in a lawless time, he needs a moral code."
We see Beckett in the teaser trailer telling Han he's putting together a crew for some sort of heist. Harrelson has previously stated that his character is something of a mentor to Han, but if he really is a "powerful criminal," he may well betraying Han--and teaching him an invaluable lesson about trust, and molding him into the selfish character we meet in A New Hope.
Another reveal from Breznican in this story is the relationship between Han and Emilia Clarke's character Qi'ra. Apparently the two crew up together on the streets, presumably running scams together. But while Han seems to retained the trappings of his young life, Qi'ra appears to have achieved a level of glamour at some point in the film.
Clarke describes her character, saying, "She has a couple of guises, but essentially she is just fighting to stay
alive. If you’ve got a really glamorous lady in a really
sordid environment, you kind of know the glamor is hiding a few rough
roads."
In this picture we get our first look at the Imperial Mudtrooper, Solo's major addition to the ever growing ranks of the Empire's military. What's more interesting perhaps, is that the image is from scenes taking place in the planet Mimban. Mimban was first mentioned in the 1978 novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was the original plan for the sequel to the original Star Wars film had it not been successful. This is it's first appearance on screen and in the current Star Wars canon.
You can see several more images from the film, along with more insight from Ehrenreich, Howard, and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, over at Entertainment Weekly.
