BREAKING: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss To Create A New Series Of 'Star Wars' Films

By: Dominic Jones

Another new series of Star Wars films is in the works.  Lucasfilm announced today that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will create a brand new series of Star Wars films which are separate from the episodic Skywalker saga and the trilogy that The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson is creating.  The duo will write and produce the new series of films.  No release dates (or directors) have been announced.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement on StarWars.com,
"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

Benioff and Weiss also released a joint statement, saying,
"In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."

As a big fan of Game of Thrones (check out my Game of Thrones podcast here), I'm very excited to see what Benioff and Weiss bring to the Star Wars galaxy.  Production is currently underway on the final season of Game of Thrones, and it is not expected to air on HBO until 2019.  With that in mind, it seems safe to assume we won't be seeing the first film from Benioff and Weiss for quite some time yet.  Regardless, it's an exciting announcement about the future of Star Wars.

The Star Wars Show released a special breaking news report about the news, which you can see below,
