John Williams Will Compose A Theme For 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'

By: Dominic Jones

Even though he's not writing the full score, the next Star Wars movie will not go without John Williams' involvement.  The legendary composer, who has written the score for all eight episodic Star Wars films, revealed his involvement in next year's stand alone adventure Solo: A Star Wars Story in a recent interview with Variety.  Williams will compose the film's key theme, which he will then pass off to John Powell, who will compose the rest of the soundtrack

"The present plan is that I’m writing a theme for Han Solo, and John Powell is going to write the score, which he’ll do brilliantly (...) What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy. … John [Powell] will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear."

It's interesting that Williams would want to write a theme for Han Solo, given that the character never really had a theme during the original (or sequel) trilogy.  But with Han taking center stage in this stand alone prequel, it gives Williams a chance to do something he never did for an iconic Star Wars character.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Kura, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Thandie Newton (Westworld), and Paul Bettany (The Avengers).  The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
