Of the main characters of The Force Awakens, Poe Dameron is definitely the unsung hero. Fortunately, Poe returns in The Last Jedi, which takes place immediately following the events of the prior film, and we'll get to see what comes next for the character. Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe, was interviewed by Esquire recently and spoke briefly about what we can expect from his character in the new film.
When it was suggested to Isaac that his character might fill the role left by Han Solo, who was killed off in the previous film, the actor replied,
"Well, there could be, but I think what [The Last Jedi
director] Rian [Johnson] did was make it less about filling a slot and
more about what the story needs. The fact is now that the Resistance has
been whittled to just a handful of people, they're running for their
lives, and Leia is grooming me — him — to be a leader of the Resistance,
as opposed to a dashing, rogue hero."
When asked how big Poe's role in the film would be compared to The Force Awakens, Isaac said, "not that much more, but a little more to do." He also apparently told Esquire that Episode IX starts filming early next year.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th. The
film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as
Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as
Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico,
Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o
as Maz Kanata.
