Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the first major film for Kelly Marie Tran, who portrays the Resistance maintenance worker Rose Tico. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, Tran described how she found out from director Rian Johnson that she had gotten the role of a lifetime. The interview was a released as part of EW's online coverage of The Last Jedi, which coincides with a cover story about the film in this week's issue.
Tran described the day Johnson told her she had been cast as Rose when she was still working as a office assistant, saying,
"The day I found out, Rian was like, ‘Oh we want you in this movie,’ I
had just left work on my lunch break to go to this meeting. Afterward, he told me that I couldn’t tell anyone, so I went
back to work and answered phones and answered emails, like nothing
happened. It was the most bizarre experience. Inside I was like, Ugh!
Crazy!"
Despite having been a part of the production and early promotion for the film, Tran says she still finds the whole experience surreal. She told EW,
"I still don’t really believe it’s real. Like when I’m
driving past the place I used to work, or when I’m driving past the
comedy studio where I used to take photos in exchange for classes, or
when I’m driving past the yoga studio I used to clean on the weekends.
It’s not that far removed from me yet. I get very sentimental over
things like that."
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th. The
film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as
Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as
Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico,
Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o
as Maz Kanata.
