When Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters next month(!), audiences worldwide will be introduced to the character of Rose Tico, played by Kelly Marie Tran. The Last Jedi is Tran's first big movie, making the audition process for the role very unique. In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Tran spoke about what it was like to audition to be Rose, as well as her experience on set, and what her interaction with the late Carrie Fisher was like.
Tran revealed that she had never seen any of the Star Wars movies when she auditioned for the role. She went to her first audition wearing a Ravenclaw tie, which was her good luck charm having grown up as a massive Harry Potter fan. She auditioned for the role five times before being brought to London for the final audition, which was done on set and in costume. Tran told Buzzfeed,
"And this is why, I’m telling you, the fact that I hadn’t grown up with Star Wars really helped me. I think I would have fallen over. (...) I remember the day of that audition, I just wanted to be present. I just wanted to have fun, because there was nothing I could do at that point to control getting it or not. I remember having the most freeing feeling, and I had the best time."
After getting the role, she couldn't even tell her family she had been cast but she still tried to convince them to go see The Force Awakens, which they had no interest in doing. Her dad in particular was not interested, Tran said, "He goes, ‘Ughhh, I hate movies like that. I don’t know why people go see sci-fi movies,’And I was like, ‘Welp.'"
Tran also reflected on her time with Carrie Fisher, who reprises her role as General Organa in The Last Jedi, saying,“What a woman. The best thing about Carrie that
I witnessed was that she was just purely honest. No matter how messy
that was, or how complicated that was.”
One of the few things we know about Rose is that she will be spending a lot of time with Finn in the new movie. Tran told Buzzfeed that she really bonded with John Boyega, who plays Finn, during the filming of those scenes, saying, "John is someone who I feel like I immediately was able to mesh with. We connect on different levels because our parents are immigrants, we’re both people of color, nerds, and he’s just hilarious."
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th. The
film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as
Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as
Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico,
Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o
as Maz Kanata.
