It's been a huge day for Star Wars. Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that a live action Star Wars series is in development for the upcoming Disney streaming service. The news follows the announcement that The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson will be developing a new stand-alone trilogy of films (and writing and directing the first film). Iger made the announcement during Disney's quarterly earnings call.
Very little more is known about the series. Prior to the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, Star Wars creator George Lucas had been developing a live-action Star Wars series, with fifty scripts being written for the show. The series would have been set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and would have explored the criminal underworld of the Star Wars galaxy. However, it seems unlikely that this new series will be related to the scripts Lucas developed.
The Disney streaming service was announced back in August when the company announced they were opting out of their contract with Netflix for the streaming rights to their films and TV shows. The Star Wars series is one of three that Iger announced are being developed for the upcoming streaming service which is expected to launch in 2019.
