JJ Abrams Talks Briefly About His Approach For 'Episode IX'

By: Dominic Jones

Last month it was announced that JJ Abrams would be returning to write and direct the final installment in the sequel trilogy.  Abrams has been mostly quiet about his return to Star Wars, but he did speak briefly about it during an appearance on the BBC Radio 4 program Today alongside composer Michael Giacchino (who wrote the music for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).  Obviously, Abrams didn't say much about Episode IX since he's still in the early stages of writing it with Chris Terrio, but he did talk briefly about how he approaches Star Wars movies.

When asked about the pressure of knowing that kids all around the world are inspired by these films, Abrams said,

"Well, it’s certainly something that I’m aware of now working on Episode IX – coming back into this world after having done Episode VII. I feel like we need to approach this with the same excitement that we had when we were kids, loving what these movies were. And at the same time, we have to take them places that they haven’t gone, and that’s sort of our responsibility. It’s a strange thing – Michael’s worked on things like Planet of the Apes and Star Trek and Star Wars, and these are the things of dreams. Yet we can’t just revel in that; we have to go elsewhere."

Abrams and Giacchino were on the program to promote the upcoming concert in celebration of Giacchino's career that's happening tomorrow (Friday) at the Royal Albert Hall.  The event coincides with Giacchino's 50th birthday and will feature Giacchino being joined on stage by many of the directors he has worked with (including Abrams and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards). has an excellent interview (released in celebration of the composer's birthday) with Giacchino where he looks back on his career.  You can read that here.

Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
