Lucasfilm announced earlier today that Ron Howard would be taking over as director on the upcoming untitled young Han Solo A Star Wars Story film. This announcement came after the news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller had left (or been removed) from the project, despite having been shooting the film for close to six months. While there was no comment from Howard in the official press release, the director took to Twitter to share his excitement about joining the film. Check them out below,
I'm beyond grateful to add my voice to the Star Wars Universe after being a fan since 5/25/77.— Ron Howard (@RealRonHoward) June 22, 2017
I hope to honor the great work already done & help deliver on the promise of a Han Solo film.— Ron Howard (@RealRonHoward) June 22, 2017
Howard is best known as a director for his work on films like Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and the Lucasfilm produced Willow. He also previously worked as an actor with Star Wars creator George Lucas on American Graffiti. Howard is set to move to London immediately to begin reviewing what Lord and Miller had already shot, with production set to resume on July 10th.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said of Howard in the press release,
"At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July."
The young Han Solo film is still slated for a release on May 25th, 2018. The film stars stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Thandie Newton (Westworld), and Michael K. Williams (The Wire).
