Mark Hamill and John Boyega Talk About Working With Adam Driver on 'The Last Jedi'

By: Dominic Jones

Today, Vanity Fair has posted a follow up piece about to their cover story about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, featuring portraits of the cast by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz.  The piece offer some insight from cast & crew into the film and what life was like on the set of The Last Jedi.

Adam Driver spoke about the challenges of getting into character as the villainous Kylo Ren.  Driver stated that he doesn't approach his role in the blockbuster franchise any differently that he does his roles in the smaller projects he's known for.

Driver said,
"There’s big personal things that I find about every character, not just in Star Wars, that you have to make as personal as possible (...) The things about that character that I find painful, that I really relate to, I kind of prefer to keep to myself."

Driver's approach to his character made him very intense to be around on set.  Finn actor, John Boyega took it upon himself to try and break this tension by surprising Driver with hugs.  Boyega said, "He just stands there. He just waits for me to be done."

Luke Skywalker actor, Mark Hamill took a different approach to breaking through Driver's intensity. Hamill told Vanity Fair,

"I remember saying to Adam, ‘I don’t know how you work, or your technique. But, at some point, you were my nephew. I probably bounced you on my knee. I probably babysat for you. There’s that side, and now we’re both estranged from the Skywalker family. All I’m suggesting is, if you’d like, maybe we could go to lunch, we could get together and hang out.’"

Driver turned down Hamill's invitation.

Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.  The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Benicio Del Toro, and Lupita Nyong'o.
