Rumor: The Return of Star Wars in 3D in 2014

By: Dominic Jones

Could the Star Wars prequel films be getting a 3D re-release after all?  Despite having their release dates postponed, the 3D release of Star Wars Episodes II & III, it seems, may be back on the horizon for Star Wars fans.  The Dutch fansite has found what seems to indicate the return.  According to their report,

"I've got another tidbit of news. Pathé is a large chain of cinemas in The Netherlands and whilst browsing their website I stumbled across something interesting. It was something I haven't come across anywhere else, so the first thing I did, was call to confirm it. And they did. On the website they have Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith listed for December 31st, 2014, both movies in 3D!

Naturally I also got in touch with Disney Netherlands, but I yet have to hear back from them. Also, another small detail: films in The Netherlands usually premier on a Thursday, so (as was also the case with Episode III) I immediately figured it would premier here on December 17th, 2015. Disney NL at the time couldn't confirm, but in my telephone call with Pathé they also confirmed this date."

Lucasfilm's Pablo Hidalgo addressed the rumors earlier today when asked by our friend Jason from and the good guys over at the Star Wars Kidscast with the following tweets,
Not the most promising of responses from Pablo, but it's still possible that there is hope to see the 3D conversions of the prequels get a wide release.  We know that Episode II is completed and that work was being done on Episode III, so it may not be too much of stretch if Disney wants to use to old films as marketing tool for Episode VII (teaser trailer, anyone?).  On the other hand it could just be a mistake on the part of the Dutch theater chain, who failed to take down the listings for the films when they were postponed.  On the other, other hand all three of the screenings of Episode II in 3D were filled to capacity at Celebration Europe this past summer so there is a market for these films.  And it begs the question, if the prequels are getting their 3D day in the sun, will the Original Trilogy be far behind?

So are you excited about the prospect of seeing Episodes II and III in 3D, or would you rather Lucasfilm and Disney keep moving forward rather than looking back?  Let us know in the comments or on Facebook.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed (or denied) by Lucasfilm and/or Disney.
