The beginning of the end? Or the end of the beginning?
By: David Gremillion
Chewie with mouse ears? Tinkerbell with a lightsaber? Leia as the new Disney princess? The Millennium Falcon soaring through the Asteroid Field saying "KA-CHOW"?
Brace yourselves fans, Disney has bought Lucasfilm lock, stock and barrel for the bargain price of $4.05 billion. This decision should hardly surprise anyone at all. Disney and Lucasfilm have been incredibly close over the last few years. "The Maker" himself was at Disney in 2011. The Star Wars Weekend has always been a highlight of Walt Disney World. Pixar was originally a spawn of Industrial Light and Magic, a Lucasfilm child. I have no problem with Disney planting their mouse ears over Jabba.
Then someone dropped a thermal detonator in my lap. Disney wants to make Episodes VII, VIII, and IX? They had better keep wishing on a star. A series of sequels would be a wretched idea for several reasons. First, the circle is finally complete. We have two trilogies with two endings. Anakin became Vader, Vader redeemed himself, we had closure. A new trilogy would take away focus from the Skywalker family entirely.
Second, what story would Disney go with? The Thrawn series? Truce at Bakura? Jump ahead to the Yuuzhan Vong war? The possibilities are beyond endless. Worse still, anything they do will have fanboys (and girls) howling across cyberspace. "How can they do ______ and not do ______?" will be the new battle-cry.
Finally, Star Wars sequels would be difficult to do with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher at their current age. Unless...Pixar gets involved. Computer generated movies with them as voice actors might work, but would audiences buy it? Can we have six movies with our beloved trio only to have them replaced by figures that belong in The Incredibles?
The best way that 2015 might not be a Geek Apocalypse would be for Disney to bring us something we have never seen before. Disney could bring us a side of Star Wars we've whispered about, seen comic books about, and played video games about. The mighty Disney empire might bring us something truly unique. This can be the beginning of the end for Star Wars...or it might be the end of the beginning when Disney presents us with:
Star Wars: The Old Republic trilogy.
