Star Wars Barrel Organ = Coolest Instrument Ever

By: Dave Bouressa

Imagine one of those tiny music boxes with the crank on the side. Now imagine that same music box, but a hundred times bigger, made of 20,000 legos set up to look like scenes from the Star Wars films, and oh yeah, this music box is playing the Star Wars theme on an organ. Yeah, pretty awesome.

Check out the Organ here:

To promote the 3D release of Star Wars Episode I last February, the creative minds at Serviceplan Campaign in Munich, Germany, have developed an oversized barrel organ, made using over 20,000 Lego bricks. The bricks have been set to recreate 4 scenes from the Star Wars films- The attack on the Death Star, Mos Eisley Spaceport, the Battle of Hoth, and the Battle of Endor. Granted, there are some creative liberties within the sets, some examples being Geonosian ships on Tatooine, Yoda vs The Emperor on the Death Star, and Gungans and Battle Droids on Endor. Fans are also able to purchase any of the lego sets featured due to a QR code on the organ. All one needs to do is take a picture of the code with a smartphone or iPhone, and the code will automatically take you to the online Lego store.

These scenes have been carefully arranged so when turned, pieces of the set strike a mallet, which in turn hits a key on an organ, creating the iconic opening theme music from the films.

You can see the organ in action here:

This musical contraption was conceived by a team from Serviceplan Campaign Managing Directors, Matthias Harbeck and Stefan Schütte, with help from Andreas Balog, Oliver Palmer, Alexander Rehm and Nicolas Becker. The actual barrel organ was constructed by two profession Lego builders, Rene Hoffmeister and Axel Al-Rubaie.

You can see the making of the barrel here:

The barrel organ has already been on tour in Germany since January, and as of now, unfortunately, there is no word just yet on whether it will visit any other countries. However, fans all over the world are able to play the organ on the Lego website and select their favorite features from the organ to purchase.
