'The Last Jedi' Editor Talks About the Death of Admiral Ackbar

When it comes to characters who died in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the focus tends to be on the likes of Luke Skywalker, Vice Admiral Holdo, and Supreme Leader Snoke.  But there's another character who was killed off during the events of The Last Jedi, whose death some fans feel was underplayed.  That is, of course, the death of Admiral Ackbar.  Ackbar was on the bridge during Kylo Ren's assault on General Leia's flagship, The Raddus, and was sucked out into space as a result (and, unlike Leia, did not have the Force to guide himself back to safety).

This moment was brought up to The Last Jedi editor Bob Ducsay during a recent interview with The Huffington Post, where Ducsay revealed that he's been having second thoughts about the way Ackbar's death played out.  Although he confirmed that the moment is executed exactly as it was planned, Ducsay said,

"I watched the film last night and I thought, hmmm, maybe that’s too incidental. It’s a very funny thing about that because what happens ... I don’t typically watch movies that I work on much afterwards, because you’re so familiar with it. But this movie I’ve seen now a couple times with an audience. And it occurred to me last night that what does happen when I watch movies ... is I generally find things that are like, hmmm, I wonder if I should do that differently. Which is some really horrible form of personal criticism because there’s really nothing to be done."

Ackbar is a beloved character for many, and perhaps his death deserved more fanfare, however, for general audiences, what's most important is what's happening to Leia and what's going to happen with Poe and Holdo. The fact that his death is mentioned at all is really a nod to the fans who have given the character something of a cult-following, thanks to his "It's a Trap!" line from Return of the Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters now!
