The head of the Star Wars creature shop Neal Scanlan spoke with Entertainment Weekly recently, as part their online The Last Jedi coverage to coincide with their cover story in this week's magazine.  In the interview, Scanlan talks with EW's Anthony Breznican about the creation of a new creature from the film, that fans have dubbed the "Crystal Foxes."

EW revealed that the real name of the species Crystal Foxes is Vulptex and that a group of them is known as a Vulptices.  Scanlan explains the look of the characters, telling EW,

"They live within the burrows and within the tunnels beneath the planet. So there is a time where their ability to shine within the darkness, should provide a guiding light to our heroes."

He also spoke about how they dressed up a small dog come in to help visualize the look of the Vulptex, before building animatronic puppets to have on set and models to scan for CGI artists.  Scanlan said,

"We had a little dog come in and we built a little suit for it, and we covered that suit with clear drinking straws. It was amazing to see him run around. It could run and jump, and it had this wonderful sort of movement to it. It had a great sound to it, as well, because all the little straws moved and flexed with the animal."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on December 15th.  The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata.
