Over the course of the weekend, several new Hasbro Black Series figures were revealed at Star Wars Celebration Orlando.

Rey's speeder and a Tatooine Luke Skywalker (complete with floppy hat) were the highlights among others, but two that drew excitement late in the week were Thrawn and Jaina Solo. Kennedy Comments on Future of the Saga

7 comments
Gerardo Mora/Getty Images for Disney
By Zac Arnold
@Zac_dfw

Shortly after the trailer for The Last Jedi was revealed at Star Wars Celebration Orlando, questions about the future of Star Wars began to rise again.

Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, had high praise for TLJ director Rian Johnson, and how he is helping progress the franchise. "I love his talent [and] commitment to these stories, and his understanding of the mythology George created," Kennedy said during an interview folowing the trailer's reveal. "It's really something that I think you'll see that he takes the characters [and] develops their complexities. He's not afraid to try things that move us into a more complex universe, and I think that's great."

This commentary should be encouraging for fans who felt The Force Awakens was too shallow and the new characters needed depth. For the fans concerned about Star Wars as a whole and where it intends to go after Episode IX, the questions still abound.

Kennedy noted that the intent is to create more movies after the sequel to The Last Jedi, but was not committal on that those movies could look like. "George always intended nine movies," Kennedy said. "And whether we continue that or not is something we're talking about right now. If the story warrants it, we'll absolutely do it."

When asked whether she had a timetable regarding an announcement over such a monumental decision, Kennedy said: "Certainly by next year."

Do you think the story of the Skywalker family should be the focal point after nine episodes? Or do movies like Rogue One and the Han Solo film give rise to a new Star Wars storytelling method? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Name of a Planet From "The Last Jedi" Revealed

5 comments

By Zac Arnold
@Zac_dfw

In an interview with The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, EW has uncovered the name of one of the planets seen in the teaser trailer.

The question of the name of the planet the skimmers in the trailer was revealed: it's called Crait.

"It's way out there. It's very remote. It's uncharted," Johnson said in the interview. "It's a mineral planet and there are mines on it." Johnson also said the planet was home to an old Rebel Alliance base and is now being re-purposed.

This does not appear to be a passing location or brief stop on this new adventure. Johnson said this planet with a salt covering (not snow like Hoth) and ruby-like minerals beneath is going to include a crucial point where the Resistance has to "deal with a pressing and imminent threat."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi releases December 15.

It had previously been reported that already-existing footage of Carrie Fisher would be used for her to appear in the untitled Star Wars Episode IX. In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy clarified the direction they are taking by saying: "Sadly, Carrie will not be in IX."

Todd Fisher, Carrie's brother, had previously said unused footage from previous movies would be used to help bridge the gap his sister left behind. You can catch the entire interview with Kennedy below:

What do you think? Should they have used the footage, or is it more respectful to the Princess' legacy this way? Let us know in the comments!

The Star Wars Celebration in Orlando announced today the newest novel helping lead up to The Last Jedi. The Lucasfilm Publishing Writers' roundtable in Orlando announced a story centered around Captain Phasma, played by Gwendoline Christie in the movies, is slated to release in September. It is intended to help prepare fans for the movie - hence the book's series name "Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi."

The book is to be written by Delilah S. Dawson, who previously wrote the short stories "The Secret Weapon" telling adventures leading up to The Force Awakens.

In case you missed it, the teaser trailer for The Last Jedi also released today. December can't get here soon enough! For the impatient, hopefully this September release will help add to the hype.
