Simon Kinberg Hints at 'Rebels' Characters "Feeding into Future Movies"

By: Dominic Jones

Simon Kinberg, executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, spoke with Moviefone recently and hinted at some future connections between the animated series and the live action Star Wars movies.  Kinberg spoke about how they went about integrating Rebels into the current Star Wars canon by including classic Star Wars characters as well as bringing in characters from the previous animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars in recurring roles in Season Two. He also alluded to the fact that you might see some characters from Rebels show up in the future movies.  Kinberg said,

"What's lovely is, obviously, we've brought in characters from 'Clone Wars' in the second season, and we keep sort of bringing characters from the original movies and sort of deepening the relationships between our core characters, the Ghost crew.  So it's trying to balance the two different things, like the original cast from the first season with 'Clone Wars,' with characters from the original movies, and maybe even feeding into future movies."

To be fair, Kinberg has been suggesting there are connections between Rebels and the new movies since before Season One.  Which was true to an extent.  There weren't any ground shaking crossovers that some fans were hoping for.  This was due in large part to the fact that Rebels is set over 30 years before the events of The Force Awakens, making such crossovers difficult.  However, with Rogue One being set in roughly the same time period as Rebels, it seems more likely for it to become a reality this season.  There is also the groundbreaking news that Forest Whitaker is playing Saw Gerrera, a character who first appeared on The Clone Wars, in Rogue One.  Having a character jump from an animated series to the films is unprecedented and opens the door for more characters to make the conversion.  Could we see a cameo by the crew of The Ghost in Rogue One?  Well, now more than ever, anything is possible.
