Just a few days ago Star Wars Battlefront was released much to the pleasure of millions of fans who have been waiting for over a decade for another Battlefront game. Thankfully we're already being assured that we won't have to wait nearly as long for the next installment in the series. Gamespot reports that just before the game launched earlier this week EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen spoke about Battlefront at the UBS Global Technology Conference in San Francisco, California. He had a lot to say, most importantly confirming that sequels for Star Wars Battlefront are part of their plan, among other games. Here's what he had to say:
"We struck a licensing deal with Disney a few years back that's almost ten years in length. The game that comes out tomorrow, Star Wars Battlefront, is a traditional first-person style shooter game. Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC. It's a huge opportunity for us."
Jorgensen also discussed the overall scope of their capabilities, reiterating that they have access to all parts of the current and future saga. He also added that one major requirement for all their games is for them to fit well within the established universe:
"We get access to all of the historical content as well as all the new content developed. The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is it's almost unlimited in what you can do with it. We know Disney has done a great job with other franchises and we believe they'll do the same with Star Wars over time in delivering new worlds, new characters, new vehicles, all the things that make great video games. Our goal is not to make video games directly about the movies, it's to use the IP in the movie to make great, exciting games."
It certainly is interesting that the prospect of another Battlefront game is already on the table just as the current game is being released. I'm intrigued to see what kind of ideas EA has and what other elements could be included in future Battlefront. Hopefully we will see some of the things the current Battlefront curiously lacks, such as space battles, content from eras outside the Original Trilogy and more story driven gameplay. Whatever they've got in store for us, I can't wait to play it!
