Kevin Smith Has Seen A "Chunk" Of 'The Force Awakens', And He Loved It

By: Benjamin Hart

It's hard not to be jealous of Kevin Smith. The legendary Podcaster and filmmaker made headlines last year when he visited the set of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and subsequently discussed his emotional experience climbing aboard the Millennium Falcon. Now Smith is back talking Star Wars, and this time it seems he's actually seen at least some of the film itself. Epic Stream reports that Smith spoke vaguely about seeing a portion of a certain film on a recent episode of his Hollywood Babble-On Podcast. He's careful not to mention any names or titles for obvious reasons, but it's heavily implied that the film is indeed The Force Awakens. Here's what he had to say:

“I saw a buddy of mine, a fellow filmmaker friend, who is making this movie that is so f***ing wonderful. And I saw a chunk of it. And it was… spellbinding. This is the only way I can describe it. It’s like, I love movies and sometimes I over praise them and s**t, but this is the only way I can describe this: it was like – not figuratively, literally – being transported to the fountain of youth. And having the fountain of youth take me back to 1977. First time I saw a picture called Star Wars. I can’t say much more.”

You can listen to his comments, which happen early on in the episode, by clicking here. But be warned, lots of NSFW language is included in typical Kevin Smith fashion.

Just earlier today we heard from Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, who also had high praise for the film. While I still don't want to set my expectations too high, it's certainly encouraging to hear things like this and makes the wait until December 18th that much harder.

New 'The Force Awakens' Themed Toys"R"Us & Duracell TV Spots Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

With the release of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens just around the corner we can already begin to expect to see Star Wars hit the small screen as well as the big screen this Winter. Recently two new heartwarming and awe inspiring commercials surfaced from Toys"R"Us and Duracell. You can watch them both below!

First off, Toys"R"Us released a TV spot titled "Like Father, Like Daughter" which is sure to tug at your heartstrings, focusing a on Star Wars loving Dad and his seemingly uninterested daughter:

The next one from Duracell is truly epic. Focusing on a young boy and his sister, the commercial features a stunning battle with First Order Stormtroopers and also features appearances by R2-D2, C-3PO(with his red arm) and Kylo Ren's command shuttle, as well as much more:

Huge kudos to both companies for creating two memorable commercials! I can't wait to see more between now and December 18th!

Harrison Ford Promises Fans "You will Not be Disappointed" with 'The Force Awakens

By: Dominic Jones

Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford appeared on Jimmy Kimmel live (while dressed as a hot dog) to talk about Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.  Ford obviously didn't say much about the film, but he did tell Kimmel, "The new cast — Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac — are phenomenal. J.J. has made an incredible movie. You will not be disappointed at all. I promise you."

You can see Ford talk about The Force Awakens and his history with Star Wars with Jimmy Kimmel below,

Ford also talked about his injury on the set of The Force Awakens and confirmed that it was the Millennium Falcon door that fell on his ankle,

He also spoke about the plane crash he was in earlier this year,

I have to say, this is one the best interviews with Ford I've ever seen.  It's nice to see him so positive and excited about Star Wars (and it was so great to have him admit he was glad Han wasn't killed off in Return of the Jedi).

Gwendoline Christie Talks Captain Phasma

By: Dominic Jones

Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens star Gwendoline Christie chatted with Entertainment Weekly this week about her role as Captain Phasma in the upcoming film.  Christie spoke about Phasma and the fact that this is the first female villain in the Star Wars films (TV shows, books, and comics have had female villains in the past, but Phasma is the first on the silver screen), and her first memory of Star Wars.

On Phasma's chrome plate armor she said,
“We know very little about her at this stage, but what I think people are drawn to is that this is a very progressive female character,” the actress says. “We see Captain Phasma, and we see the costume from head to toe, and we know that it is a woman. But we are used to, in our media, connecting to female characters via the way that they look, from the way they are made flesh.”

On being the first female villain in a Star Wars movie,
“It’s incredible, it’s timely, and I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

Christie also recalled her first Star Wars memory, saying,
“It’s one of the first Christmases I remember, and A New Hope was on the television. I really just fell in love with it.  I remember very distinctly adoring Princess Leia, because even in my infant mind, I thought, ‘Gosh, that’s a woman with strength.’”

The more I hear from Gwendoline Christie the more excited I get that she's in Star Wars (and I was already very excited when she was cast after having seen her in Game of Thrones).

Rumor: New Details About a Crucial Scene in 'The Force Awakens'

By: Dominic Jones

Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens is under 50 days away, and more details about a crucial scene in the film have emerged.  Our pals over at just revealed some details about one of the most intriguing scenes in The Force Awakens relating to the Knights of Ren, Luke Skywalker, and more on the 101st episode of their podcast Now This is Podcasting.  As usual, there is a chance this could be wrong but if you are trying to avoid all The Force Awakens spoilers then stop reading now.  This is you SPOILER ALERT!
At last, the mystery surrounding the flashback scene which takes place at Maz Kanata's castle around the middle of the film is beginning to unfold.  Recall, we had previously heard that scene involved a confrontation between the Clan and the Seven.  We now believe the Seven are the Knights of Ren and this report sheds some light on who the Clan are.  Our friends Jason, Randy, Jeremy broke down the scene in depth on the latest Now This is Podcasting and here's what they said,
  • Maz leads the heroes (Han, Finn, and Rey) down a staircase into the catacombs of her castle, while she explains who Luke was, retelling the events of the original trilogy
  • When they enter the chamber in the catacombs, Maz continues the story and it goes to flashbacks (the rest of what follows takes place in flashbacks)
  • Luke returns to his academy and everyone is dead, they have been slaughtered
  • we then see the outside shot of Luke saying goodbye to R2 from the trailers

  • It appears it was the Knights of Ren who did this
  • Maz explains that Luke retreats into private life
  • We then see Naka's hand picks up the lightsaber (which is a reprise of what we saw at the beginning of the film), we then see him turn it on in his house and accidentally sets it on fire.  He runs away and then has to go back to get the lightsaber
  • Naka sells the Saber to a trader for next to nothing
  • The Clan is lead by a prosperous rich man
  • The Knights of Ren have raided the Clan before
  • The Clan leader goes to the trader and buys the saber to defend against the Knights of Ren
  • The Clan fights the Knights of Ren and loses
  • Rey and her parents were part of the Clan, but they escape the attack
  • Shot from the trailer is the Knights of Ren after having slaughtered the Clan
  • Kylo sees Rey during the attack
  • Kylo gets the Saber, but Maz steals it
  • The family gets away and drops Rey off on Jakku and have never gone back for her
I must say this sounds like an intense scene.  It also certainly points to the idea that Rey is not related to anyone we already know (meaning she is neither Han and Leia's daughter nor Luke's daughter).  It does leave the possibility of her being related to other characters open (what if she's a Kenobi?) bu it seems that when the film opens Rey really is no one (and not someone with amnesia).  It also lines up with the rumor that Rey fears leaving Jakku because she worries if she does her parents will never find her again.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Video: Stephen Colbert Guesses the Plot of 'The Force Awakens'

By: Dominic Jones

With the release of the new trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens last week, it was a natural topic for discussion on various the late night talk shows.  While most focused on the reaction to the trailer or the fact that it debuted during football, The Late Show host Stephen Colbert took a different approach.  Colbert, who previously did a segment on his old show The Colbert Report about Kylo Ren's lightsaber back when the first trailer debuted, used this as an opportunity to share his theory on the plot of The Force Awakens.  Check it out below,

How close is he?  We'll find out on December 18th!

George Lucas Asks JJ Abrams About Darth Vader's Grandchildren

By: Dominic Jones

Vanity Fair released a new video on their YouTube channel today of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams answering questions from other celebrities, including Star Wars creator George Lucas.  Lucas posed the question to JJ of what happens to Darth Vader's grandchildren?

"You tell me man, you made all this sh*t up," replied Abrams, who was clearly amused by being asked a Star Wars question by the creator Star Wars.

Check out the video below for yourself to see Lucas, as well as several other celebrities (including Jared Leto wanting to know why he wasn't cast as Chewbacca in The Force Awakens) asking Abrams question below,

I have to say it was nice to see a small exchange between the two, especially a humorous one.  It's nice to see the man who created Star Wars able to joke around (albeit, via a pre-recorded question) with the guy charged with kick starting the franchise once more.

Synopsis for 'Before the Awakening' Offers New Details About 'The Force Awakens' Characters

By: Dominic Jones

Details about the main characters of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens are sparse, with little outside of what we learned at Celebration back in April being known.  With the film now less than 50 days away, it only makes sense we begin to learn a little more about them.  The Spanish synopsis for the upcoming anthology of short stories titled Star Wars: Before the Awakening by Greg Rucka offers some new, minor, details about Poe Dameron and Finn.  This stuff isn't really a spoiler, it's strictly backstory stuff and vague at that.  That being said, it does offer a little more insight into these characters.

The Synopsis reads,
“Before they united in the fight against evil, Rey, Poe and Finn led very different lives. Rey was a lone scavenger on the desert planet of Jakku. Poe was a pilot for the Republic. And Finn was only FN-2187, a promising but reluctant stormtrooper. These are their stories. This is what happened before the Awakening.”

The Finn stuff does line up with some previous spoiler reports.  It's also interesting that it states Poe was a pilot for the Republic, not the Resistance...

Star Wars: Before the Awakening hits shelves on December 18th, the same day The Force Awakens hits theatres.

Rebels Review: 'Always Two There Are'

By: Dominic Jones

With Halloween coming up this weekend, Star Wars Rebels aired an appropriately eerie episode this week in "Always Two There Are".  Much like this summer's movie event/Season Two premiere, "The Siege of Lothal", "Always Two There Are" sets about to show the audience the ways in which the events at the end of Season One changed the playing field for the series.  The Grand Inquisitor may be gone, but he's been replaced by two new Inquisitors, The Fifth Brother and The Seventh Sister, who see this as their opportunity to rise through the ranks and impress their master, Darth Vader.

The Fifth Brother was introduced at the end of last week's episode, but we got a much better sense of who he is this week, especially when compared to The Seventh Sister (voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar).  You get the sense that the Fifth Brother may be more powerful than the Seventh Sister, however it is clear that what the Seventh Sister lacks in power she makes up for in intelligence.  The Seventh Sister definitely stole the show this week: her interactions with both Ezra and the Fifth Brother conveyed a sense of confidence, and she spoke as though she knew she was the smartest one in the room.  The relationship between the two Inquisitors was classic Dark Side--working together while also trying to gain the upper hand against the other and stab them in the back (figuratively or literally).  It's clear that the vacuum left by the Grand Inquisitor’s death has led to a race to the top among the other Inquisitors, each vying to win the role as Darth Vader's go to guy.

On the heroes side the kids took center stage this week--not that this was a "kiddie" episode by any means.  Ezra, Sabine and Zeb were the main focus of the story, while the older characters--Kanan, Hera, and Rex--sat out most of this episode.  "Always Two There Are" gave us a chance to see the way Ezra, Sabine, and Zeb work without the safety net of Kanan and Hera. Ezra’s willingness to sacrifice himself for Sabine and Zeb offered a nice juxtaposition to "Spark of Rebellion", when Hera had to convince him to put his life at risk for others--showing how far he's come since the series began.  It was also interesting to see how both Ezra and Sabine dealt with being captured, as both seemed willing to lay down their lives for the cause.

Zeb really got a chance to shine in this episode.  His monologue to Chopper about saving Ezra and Sabine showed us the more heroic Zeb we don't get to see nearly enough.  Too often Zeb gets cast in the role of comic relief, getting angry with Chopper and/or Ezra and chasing them until someone falls over and/or crashes into something (which still happened this week, unfortunately).  It can be easy to forget that Zeb was a member of the honor guard on his planet, but in moments like his speech to Chopper we get a glimpse into what he was like before joining the Rebels.

That’s not to say all of Zeb’s comic relief in this episode was bad.  Him getting stuck trying to get into the Ventilation shaft, as well as the return of "Commander Meiloorun", worked quite well and came at the right point of the story.  Unlike Zeb’s race with Ezra, these scenes helped break some of the tension in the episode and added in some much needed humor in what was otherwise an incredibly dark episode.

Much like last week, the final scene was a standout moment in the episode, as the kids return and report on what they saw.  The information that there are more Inquisitors out there has a devastating impact on Kanan.  While Kanan claims he didn't know there were more Inquisitors, his body language suggests he knows more than he's letting on.  This news would have a major impact on all involved, but Kanan seems more affected than anyone else.  Granted, he was tortured at the hands of the Grand Inquisitor last season--that would leave a scar on anyone--but I can't help thinking that there was more to his reaction.

The only real negatives for me this week were pretty minor.   As I mentioned already, Zeb and Ezra's race to find the medical supplies didn't really add much to the episode.  Also, why was the Seventh Sister just hanging out on an abandoned Republic Medical station?  That seemed just a bit too convenient (or will it turn out that the Rebel fleet has an Imperial spy in their midst--which could lead to some exciting stories down the line).

Much like the last two weeks, "Always Two There Are" seemed to be focused on introducing new players while simultaneously rearranging the board to set the stage for what's still to come this season.  The revelation that the Inquisitors know about Ahsoka hints again at the inevitable reunion between the apprentice who walked away and the master who fell to the dark side.  The Rebels team have been hinting at this for months, now it's just a matter of how and when.

All in all, this was my favorite episode of Season Two thus far (not counting "The Siege of Lothal").  The creepy tone of the episode was a nice shift from what we got in the past two weeks.  It was also great to see Ezra, Sabine, and Zeb on mission of their own, and to be introduced to new threats for our heroes to deal with as the season goes on.  "Always Two There Are" does an excellent job of introducing new elements to the show, while giving us another look at some of our favorites.

Score: 9/10

John Boyega & Daisy Ridley Attended A John Williams Scoring Session Today

By: Benjamin Hart

Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens is fifty days away at the moment(even less if you're reading this in the future) and while we, the fans, continue to anxiously anticipate it, for those behind the scenes, work continues on the film. In fact, just now as I type this, the man, the myth, the legend, John Williams himself is scoring brand new music for The Force Awakens. We know this thanks to some social media posts by The Force Awakens stars John Boyega(Finn) and Daisy Ridley(Rey). Today the trio attended the scoring session and shared photos of themselves with Williams amongst orchestra members. You can check out their posts below:

Mike Quinn Returns As A Classic Character In 'The Force Awakens'

By: Benjamin Hart

Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens will bring us a plethora of brand new characters this December, but we also know that plenty of characters from the previous films are still alive and well thirty-plus years later. Our friends at Making Star Wars recently noticed some social media activity from a certain Star Wars actor that confirms his involvement in The Force Awakens, and his character's appearance in the film. The following could be considered a SPOILER for those who don't want to know anything, so read further at your own risk.

Making Star Wars points us to a Facebook post by Mike Quinn , who is best know to Star Wars fans for his work on Return Of The Jedi puppeteering Lando's Sullustian co-pilot Nien Nunb, among several others. Quinn posted a still from the recently released trailer for The Force Awakens and had this to say:

Well I'm small and blurry and only in a brief moment, but I made the trailer, lol!I'm just to the left of Finn's cheek. You can just make out my large head and black vest ;)Dang I love those new X-Wings!
Posted by Mike Quinn on Monday, October 19, 2015

And when asked if Nunb will be wearing his Return Of The Jedi fatigues in Episode VII, Quinn commented that Nunb will be sporting an upgraded version of his iconic red and black clothing. Making Star Wars provided us with a zoomed in look at Nien Nunb in the trailer:

This is a solid confirmation that Nien Nunb will indeed be appearing in The Force Awakens. Rumors from late last year stated that Nunb would be making an appearance, and it wasn't until June of this year that photos of a Sullustian bearing resemblance to Nunb leaked out, and one was even spotted in the San Diego Comic Con reel, which you can see at top.

It's great to have Mike Quinn and Nien Nunb back in Star Wars!

JJ Abrams Confirms No More Trailers for 'The Force Awakens'

By: Dominic Jones

Everyone is still geeking out over the new trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and some have been wondering if we'll be seeing much more from the film before its December release.  JJ Abrams answered this question in an interview with Extra, saying definitively "no more trailers," though he did say there would be commercials for the film.  You can see Abrams discuss the response to the trailer -including the ridiculous "Luke is the villain" theory and the horrible boycott movement started by a group of bigots online- below,

I think it's a good thing that we won't see anymore trailers.  The movie is only two months away and so far the trailers have done an excellent job of teasing the fans without giving away too much.  I would hate to see that ruined with a final trailer that shows too much.

J.J. Abrams Gives 'The Force Awakens' Production Update, Answers "Where Is Luke?"

By: Benjamin Hart

A week ago tonight the first full trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens was released to the world and it has been blowing our minds ever since. Director J.J. Abrams has now stepped out from the shadows of secrecy surrounding the film to discuss the trailer and the progress of production. Today The Sydney Morning Star released an interview that they conducted with Abrams and he had some interesting things to say.

First off, they presented him with a question that many fans have been asking recently; "Where's Luke?" Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker has been absent from all promotional material for The Force Awakens, and Abrams assures that it's all part of their plan:

"These are good questions to be asking, I can't wait for you to find out the answer... It's no accident."

He also went on to discuss the process of post-production and how close they are to finishing the film:

"The visual effects process goes on for so long that my guess is we'll probably be doing visual effects for the next three or four weeks even though the cut will be done before then. We're in the editing room working on the cut, going over visual effects and going reviews, and we still have another scoring session with John Willams, who's a god when it comes to music."

He subsequently added that can't wait for the movie to be released and was thrilled with the reaction fans and non-fans alike had to the trailer.

You can watch the full interview below:

Sounds like The Force Awakens is very close to being completely finished, which means it won't be long until we all get to see it in theaters!

Red Fly Studio Hoping to Revive Their Cancelled Darth Maul Origins Video Game

By: Dominic Jones

If you recall, a few months back word got out that Red Fly Studio was working on a new video which would have chronicled the origins of the Sith Lord Darth Maul.  The game, which would have been similar to the Batman: Arkham series, was cancelled in 2011, but the studio is now apparently trying to revive the project.  The CEO of Red Fly Studio, Dan Borth, revealed in a recent Reddit AMA that the studio was working on reviving the game and encouraged fans to tweet their support using the hashtag "#WeWantMaul" to Disney and Lucasfilm accounts.

As for what the studio is doing, Borth revealed that they are "currently working on a full next gen demo of all things Maul to show to the powers that be. It's been a lot of work on our off time" and that to bring the game back they "need to approach EA with a demo that will impress them. I think we have that or are close to it. Still it is completely not up to us."  He also stated that he would hope "EA will see the value in us reskinning our combat mechanic to be more in line with what they are thinking for Star Wars if they are not interested in maul."

He also revealed that the game was originally going to follow Maul from when he was just days old to right before The Phantom Menace.  It would have also featured a cut scene where Sidious kills Plagueis in his sleep.  The game was later slated to be set in The Clone Wars era, and would have seen Maul teaming up with his brother Savage Opress.  It was later moved to the "Legacy" era of the old Expanded Universe, at the request of George Lucas, and would have featured a character who was a lot like Maul teaming up with Darth Talon.  Borth stated many more Sith were designed for this iteration of the game.

But don't expect the game, if it's even resurrected to look anything like the old ideas.  Borth makes it clear that, while he and his team liked their old ideas, should the game be resurrected the Lucasfilm Story Group and Disney would have the final say in what the game was.  In a perfect world they would do Maul's origin story but they're open to anything, including a post-The Clone Wars Maul story or a game about a different character.

I'm open to the idea of Red Fly Studio bringing back their Maul game, it sounds like a passion project for these guys and I can definitely support that.  Plus, I trust the Story Group to make sure this game fits in with continuity and feel like authentic Star Wars.  Also, I would love to see some video game stories set in the prequel era (especially since Battlefront is original trilogy only!)

Would you like to see the Red Fly Studio Darth Maul game resurrected?  Let us know in the comments below.

(Also, check out this demo that was created for one of the versions of the game.  Borth noted during the AMA that this was just a demo and that had the game gone any further they would not have had the Death Watch soldiers fighting with Darksabers - as there is only one Darksaber).
