Rumor: Felicity Jones in Talks to Star in 2016 Stand Alone Film

By: Dominic Jones

UPDATE!  Variety has corroborated this story, adding to the evidence that Jones is indeed the productions main choice for the lead.

Original Story:
Not too long ago we heard that Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) was screen testing for the female lead in the 2016 Star Wars Stand Alone film, directed by Gareth Edwards.  Now it seems she all but has the part.  The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jones has been selected and is now in talks to star in the film.  They also report that Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Edgar Ramirez (Wrath of the Titans) are in talks for the male lead.

This story comes after a week of rumors stating that Tatianna Maslany, who was part of the original screen testing story with Jones and Rooney Mara, had been cast in the film.  This was due in large part to her dropping out of the off Broadway production of The Way We Get By, however The Wrap discovered the real reason she dropped out was due to her being cast in the upcoming indie film Two Lovers and a Bear with Dane DeHaan.

The reason I trust this story much more than I trust any of the other rumors from the past week about Maslany is that this comes from The Hollywood Reporter.  THR is the best of the best (along with Variety) when it comes to industry publications.  They have the best, most well connected sources and if it comes from the it has likely gone through a vigorous cross-referencing/fact checking process to ensure that it is true.

Personally, I'm quite happy with this casting.  I thought Jones great in The Theory of Everything, for which she was recently nominated for an Oscar.  As for the male leads, I can't say I'm familiar with Ramirez but seeing as a white woman has been cast in the female lead it would be nice to see some ethnic diversity in the male lead.  That being said, I loved Aaron Paul on Breaking Bad and would love to see what he could do in a Star Wars film.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

The first stand alone film is slated for a December 16th, 2016 release date and is directed by Gareth Ewards and written by Chris Weitz and Gary Whitta.
